As part of an extensive and unprecedented growth plan, Howard University’s Advancement Department has embarked on the ambitious task of vastly expanding its reach. Building off multiple history-making gifts in 2020, Howard is ready to excite alumni and friends of the University by building a compelling case for philanthropic support. The Advancement team will draw from a pool of the most dynamic and creative fundraisers, identifying top recruits for the following roles:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving, The Directors of Development (two positions) provide leadership for all major gift fundraising initiatives for their respective units within Howard University. The Directors work directly with the School’s Deans, other Directors, and specific faculty to develop fundraising priorities and goals, and lead philanthropic revenue generation in alignment with the vision of the President and Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations. Building on the recent success of interests and gifts to Howard, the successful candidates will develop a plan for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for a portfolio of 75-120 benefactors and prospects, with a primary focus on alumni and friends of the University.
The Director of Development, University Strategic Initiatives, holds the primary responsibility for planning and executing Development strategies for University-wide initiatives that fall outside a College/School purview or include significant donors with whom the President engages. Building on the recent increase in and gifts to Howard, the Director will proactively coordinate engagement and stewardship for the University’s most significant donors. Working closely with the Office of the President and the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Director will ensure that cultivation and stewardship plans are well developed, carefully coordinated, and rigorously enacted.
The Director of Development, Corporate and Foundation Giving reports to the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Giving. This mission-critical position serves as the key steward for a rich portfolio of current and prospective philanthropists in support of Howard University. This position is expected to meet annual fundraising targets by identifying, engaging, cultivating, and ultimately soliciting major gifts from donors, thereby advancing the organizational mission and creating meaningful impacts in the lives of both donors and beneficiaries of that mission. The Director will work directly with corporations, businesses, and private foundations locally and nationally to develop priorities and goals.
Reporting to the Director of Advancement Services, The Director of Annual Giving will be responsible for the planning, management, and growth of annual gifts through direct mail, TeleCenter, and electronic solicitation. Utilizing both participation and upgrade methodologies, the Director of Annual Giving will build strategies for acquiring new donors, with a special emphasis on increasing alumni donors, as well as upgrading and retaining current donors and coordinating the year-round acquisition and cultivation program. More specifically, the successful candidate will lead a team of one and have responsibility for increasing annual giving revenue, broadening the base of support, and strengthening the major gift pipeline.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Institutional Giving, the Director of Advancement Communications oversees the creation of donor-centered communication tools and strategies that enhance donor relationships and build a culture of philanthropy at Howard University. The Director will lead a communications program that targets alumni, donors, and key stakeholders to generate support for Howard University and the University’s strategic priorities in preparation for a comprehensive capital campaign. the Director of Advancement Communications will create and implement a sophisticated multimedia communications plan to elevate Howard University’s overall alumni engagement, annual fund, major gift, donor stewardship, planned giving, and marketing efforts. The position will act as the internal coordinator for all Advancement communication and marketing.
The Digital Communications Manager, reporting to the Director of Advancement Communications, will develop and build an integrated digital presence to advance Howard University’s mission, vision, programmatic work, marketing, and fundraising efforts. The Digital Communications Manager will drive the growth of digital revenue and engagement marketing programs, by executing effective digital and e-mail communications, engagement, and fundraising strategies and techniques. This position will use market research and database analysis to formulate and assist in the development of a strategic vision for customized messaging that enhances the overall divisional goals of cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, engagement, participation, volunteerism, and alumni pride in Howard University. The director of digital communications will work with the development office, admissions office, Chief Information Officer, alumni relations, and other key individuals on campus to develop and implement a strategy for the university’s digital presence.
The Development Writer directly supports the revenue-raising functions of Howard’s Development Department by crafting custom gift proposals, researching and creating written materials for established and emerging development priorities, and acting as editor for the Development Office on a variety of written projects. S/he works strategically with Howard University colleagues to ensure messages to the external and internal communities are consistent with Howard standards and its brand.
