Relief International is a leading non-profit organization that works in the most fragile settings in the world to relieve poverty, ensure well-being, and advance dignity. It it seeking a Director of Development and Communications to develop the first strategic vision for both functions, ensuring that they are positioned to sharply define and promote RI’s national brand, broaden its visibility, and attract significant support and resources.

The programs it delivers blend humanitarian aid and development efforts to provide immediate services and lay the groundwork for long-term impact. RI’s signature approach—the RI Way—emphasizes local participation, integration of services, strategic partnerships, and civic skills, in an approach that empowers communities to find, design, and implement solutions that work for them—and for generations to come.
While the development program at Relief International is embryonic, it has achieved some important early successes. Thanks to the work of a communications team that has taken the initiative to pursue digital fundraising initiatives, the program has demonstrated potential for significant growth in both public relations and development. During Relief International’s 2015 strategic planning process, Nancy and the RI Board of Directors made building a development program a priority for the organization.
As the first person to hold this new position, the Director will design and execute RI’s first comprehensive fundraising strategy to build the individual supporter base, convert supporters to small- dollar and major donors, and cultivate select foundations and corporations in the U.S. and U .K. The Director will provide oversight for both fundraising and communications staff. The Director of Development and Communications will report to the CEO, engage and support the Advancement Committee of the Board of Directors, and work with senior staff on special fundraising initiatives.
- 7 to 10 years of demonstrated success working in all major elements of a comprehensive external relations program, including online marketing, direct campaigns, and major gifts.
- Experience in internal and external communications.
- Some experience working in an international humanitarian organizations is highly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree (particularly in Business, Marketing, International Relations, or a related field) is preferred.
